It is widely believed that a Weather vane or a weathervane is completely for show and is only used to decorate your home. But it actually does do something. Picking a spot for your weather vane can be very important if you want it to work effectively. Placing it as high as possible on your home without anything in the way is the best place to get the best readings. Weathervanes operate by having a rather lightweight spinner move around the top of it in order to catch the wind and measure its direction. So if anything is in the way or it’s not high enough, then it won’t give you accurate readings.
You can determine rather accurately which direction and how fast a storm system is moving with a weather vane. Be sure to stand in the same spot for all of your measurements. Buy a few garden gnomes to mark the place where you take all your measurements and you will have the most accurate reading of wind and storm systems in your neighborhood. It is also a very interesting experiment you can do with your kids. They will appreciate a weather vane for its simplicity and its spinning mechanism. So get out there and have some fun.
